With usage numbers almost back to pre-pandemic levels, what are the benefits of using public transport?

10 Feb, 2023

According to a recent press release from Transport for Ireland, passenger numbers on the country’s subsidised public transport network have largely recovered to pre-pandemic levels. The latest figures from their preliminary 2022 findings put Ireland’s public transport ridership recovery at 98% of pre-pandemic levels.

Figures show that just over 249 million passenger journeys have been provided by TFI nationwide services in 2022 (including Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann, Iarnród Éireann, Luas, Go-Ahead Ireland and Local Link on ‘Transport for Ireland’ Public Service Obligation (PSO)). Falling just short of the 292 million journeys that had been recorded in 2019, this may be indicative of the popularity for hybrid working.

These figures show that confidence is returning as more and more organisation’s and individual’s choose to return to the workplace even for a few days a week. The NTA also highlighted the improvements made to both the network and the cost savings on fares, showing that there has never been a better time to choose public transport.

As cities continue to grow, the need for efficient and environmentally friendly transportation options becomes increasingly important.  Whether you're commuting to work, running errands, or exploring a new city, public transport can offer a convenient and cost-effective way to get around.

Key benefits of using public transportation.

Saves Money

One of the biggest advantages of public transportation is that it can save you money in the long run. When you consider the cost of petrol / diesel, car maintenance, and car insurance costs, it becomes clear that relying on public transportation can significantly reduce your monthly transportation costs. In addition, you can now avail of a 20% discount on your annual passes for frequent users, making it even more affordable.

Reduces Traffic Congestion

Using public transportation can also help reduce traffic congestion on the roads. When more people take public transportation, there are fewer cars on the road, leading to less traffic and fewer traffic jams. This not only makes for a smoother, more enjoyable commute but it also helps to reduce air pollution and carbon emissions.

Environmentally Friendly

Public transportation is one of the most environmentally friendly modes of transportation. Most public transportation systems use clean and efficient technologies, just look at the number of electric or hybrid buses and trains now available. These emit fewer harmful pollutants than your single occupant car journey. By choosing to take public transportation, you are helping to reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to a healthier planet.

Convenient and Time-Efficient

Public transportation can also be more convenient and time-efficient than driving. It easy to schedules and plan your trip to get where you need to go. In addition, many public transportation options, such as trains and buses, offer amenities like Wi-Fi and charging outlets, allowing you to work or relax during your journey.

Promotes Community

Taking public transportation also offers the opportunity to connect with others and promote community. Whether you are riding a bus or a train, you have the chance to meet and interact with people from all walks of life. This not only helps to foster a sense of community, but it also provides an opportunity to broaden your perspectives and make new connections.

Accessibility for Everyone

Public transportation is designed to be accessible to everyone, including individuals with disabilities. Most public transportation systems have accessibility features such as ramps and designated or priority seating. This makes it easier for everyone, regardless of their abilities, to get around and access the services and amenities they need.

Supports Local Economy

Using public transportation can also support the local economy. When people take public transportation, they are more likely to shop and dine at local businesses, which helps to stimulate the local economy and create job opportunities. Public transportation also makes it easier for people to access job opportunities, which can have a positive impact on the local workforce and economy.

Reduces Stress

Driving in heavy traffic can be stressful and cause frustration. Public transportation eliminates the need to deal with traffic, parking, and road rage. Instead, you can sit back, relax, and let someone else do the driving. This can lead to a more stress-free and enjoyable commuting experience and can help you arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and ready to go.

Encourages Active Lifestyle

In some cases, taking public transportation may require a short walk or bike ride to the bus stop or train station. This can provide an opportunity to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine and encourage a more active lifestyle.

Enhances Quality of Life

Finally, using public transportation can enhance the overall quality of life for individuals and communities. It provides a convenient, reliable, and affordable means of transportation, allowing people to spend more time doing the things they love, rather than sitting in traffic. Public transportation also helps to create liveable, walkable communities, where people can live, work, and play in a safe and accessible environment.

In conclusion, public transportation offers numerous benefits for individuals and communities. Whether you are looking to save money, reduce stress, or support sustainability goals, taking public transportation is a smart choice. So, the next time you're planning a trip, consider the benefits of using public transportation and make the switch to a more sustainable and convenient mode of transportation.
